When wearing a hat for warmth, you will want to look for a hat that comes lower on the head than, say a fedora. Like a cloche, bucket hat, or slouchy beret.

The weather is turning cooler and you’re all prepared. Warm coat, waterproof boots, and scarves and mittens all lined up. But wait – there is one very important article of clothing that will keep you warm and healthy this winter.

The Hat.

According to the U.S. Army Field Manual  40 to 45 percent of body heat leaves through the head. Kinda like all the warm air escaping when the door of the house is left open. Not so great…

Now just because you need a head covering to keep warm, that doesn’t mean you have to give up on the fashion aspect. Oh, no. Hats are a fashion statement all of their own!

When wearing a hat for warmth, you will want to look for a hat that comes lower on the head than, say a fedora. Like a cloche, bucket hat, or slouchy beret. In addition, the warm winter fabrics such as wool, angora, tweeds, twills and knits will keep you cozy all season long.

Different Shapes of Headscarves

All three shapes can be tied in lots of beautiful ways

There are 3 different shapes of headscarves: Square, Rectangle (also called oblong) and Triangle. All three shapes can be tied in lots of beautiful ways. As you can imagine, there are different ties that are recommended to make only with specific shapes. Squares and triangles are used much the same – as squares are folded into a triangle shape before tying. Folding over the square into a triangle results in a thicker tie with more body and warmth. If the headscarf fabric is thin or see-through, folding the scarf also allows it to become more opaque.

 

Rectangle or Oblong scarves are used for tying intricate ties with lots of fabric as they are usually larger than a square scarf. Rectangle scarves are perfect for tying with the Hidden HEIGHT cotton undercover which effortlessly adds volume and height to one’s head.

 

A triangle scarf (or square scarf folded in half into a triangle) is placed on the head with the longest straight side at the forehead and two long pointed ends hanging down on either side. Take the two long pointed ends and tie them at the back of your neck – either above or below the third flap at the back. This is the basic tie for a square of triangle scarf and also the first step of many more intricate ways to tie a headscarf.

A pretied headscarf is really a bandana style head cover that has elastic sewn in at the neck to hold it comfortably on your head. There are two “tails” that hang down to resemble the look of a real bandana tied.

Many women love the comfort and ease of use of a pretied headscarf especially when going through hair loss or chemo. Here are some tips to help you navigate the world of the pretied head scarf.

FIT:Depending on the fit of the pre-tied, your hair texture and the fabric some pre-tieds can slip back.

Cotton and velour slip less than lycra, and a pre-tied bandana that is too tight or too loose will slip as well.

You can use a headband made for this purpose such as the Milano WiGrip which is a thin velour headband that creates friction against you scalp or hair and against the head coverings under a pre-tied scarf.

In addition, you may choose to tie the tails together to get a more secure fit.

CARE:A pretied scarf should be handwashed to keep it in tip-top shape. If there are appliques, glitter or sequins hand wash only. Lay the pretied on a towel to dry.

FABRIC: Just like with other head covers, there is a wide variety of fabrics available for a pretied head scarf. They come in velvet, cotton, lycra, and more. Cotton is generally reccommended as it allows your scalp to breathe, though velvet can be very appreciated in the fall and winter for the extra warmth it provides.

COLOR: Look for a color that complements your skin tone or eye color. Or go with a fun and funky print to add some cheer!

How can a beret be worn?

Berets can be worn in many different ways:
1. On an angle- Place the beret on your head and gently push one of the sides down to make it slant on an angle. This is a very comfortable and stylish way of wearing a beret.

2. Pulled down- Place the beret on the higher part of your head and take the front and gently pull it a little so that the front part will lay a little on your face.

3. Pan cake – Simply take the beret and put it on your head wherever feels most comfortable. Since a beret is round, it will lie on your head like a pancake.

We see that the beret was and is worn by men and women – so is this a feminine hat or more of a masculine hat?

Well, before WWI the beret was only worn by men and boys. However, after WWII, the beret became a hat worn mostly by women (men and boys however still wore them for uniform). Nowadays, the beret is mostly worn by women but men still wear it for a uniform. The beret can be made to look feminine or masculine; it all depends on the style, color and design.

A Painters Hat is a beret. It is floppy and made in many different colors. It’s the perfect hat to keep hair out of the face; which is why painters adopted this hat as their uniform for it helps them work without any distractions. Usually made of cotton, the painter hat beret usually has a stem like piece of material coming out of the top middle of the beret.

An Official Beret is a beret used for uniform. A typical uniform that has a beret is a military uniform. They are usually made from a thick wool that is very stiff. The military beret is made with a leather band in order to make it more comfortable for the wearer since it is worn a whole day long directly on their head and in the heat it may sometimes get uncomfortable without the leather band.

The Children’s Beret is a beret made for children. In the 1920’s until the 1950’s children wore berets simply for style. The girls wore a beret the color of their dress to add to their outfit and the boys usually wore white berets since the “sailor look” was in style then. A beret is the perfect hat to add to an outfit. It comes in many different colors and styles and is the most comfortable hat to wear by far. Kids berets were usually made of cotton, felt or velvet.

The Pillbox Hat

In the 1960’s Jackie Kennedy brought in the Pillbox Hat. This hat was a stiff/hard, short, small and round hat. Often this hat was decorated with either feathers, ribbon or gemstones. Sometimes, to give it a fancier or dressier look, a netted veil was added that covered ones face, it gave the hat a soft and feminine look. It was either worn tilted on an angle or sitting comfortably on the crown of one’s head.

By the mid 1970’s the “hippy” look came in. Women had adopted a variety of hairstyles many based on blow drying of hair into specific position that emanated from a center parting/ middle part. The Straw Hat with an extremely wide brim was very in at this time since it gave off a relaxed, laid back vacation look.

In the 1980’s, the Pillbox Hat that was brought about decades back, came in style again. With its decorations and netted veil it made a beautiful classy hat. However, a lot of the women still preferred getting their hair done; it made them feel younger and lighter.

In the late 1980’s through the 1990’s Princess Diana brought the hat trade back in full force. New hats, designs and designers were everywhere. Hats still remained on the top of the list of fashion at this point. Hats of all colors, designs and styles came back on the market. Until now however, there was no real coordination of hats matching to an outfit which is when Princess Diana brought in the “color coordinated look”- matching an outfit to a hat at this time.

Women’s Head Covers Style and Trends: 1940’s – War Time

Head Covering styles in War Times changed drastically from fancy, wide brimmed hats to smaller and small brimmed hats. Head covers changed from stylish and fashionable to more simple and practical. A typical war or army hat was the beret. Why? The beret became a military trademark head cover due to the fact that it was difficult to wear improperly (there’s only one way to wear it) and it could be easily stowed away without damage.

The army and military style had a great influence in Women’s Head Covers which is when the Beret came into fashion. A beret is a soft, round brimless cap with a flat crown often made of wool or cotton which makes them extremely soft and pleasant to wear. They come in many different styles and designs. These berets were at the peek of fashion at this time and were worn by women and men alike.

Another very popular head cover at this time was the Turban. At this time, women started working in factories due to the changes brought about in the war. The turban made a perfect hat or head covering because it kept the hair away from the face and covered it securely so it wouldn’t get caught in the machines.

Women’s Head Covers Styles and Trends: Pre-War Hat Styles

In the 1920’s women yearned to look sophisticated and wealthy; which is why the Cloche came back in. The cloche was a bell shaped hat that simply went out at the bottom and covered the wearer’s eyes a little bit, making one hold their head high which in effect made them look sophisticated. The cloche’s drawback was that it was somewhat masculine looking and did not have the femininity of other women’s hats. Eventually that lead to a change in styles.

This is when neat Feminine hats with extra trimming and finishes, such as the Doll Hat came into fashion. The doll hat is a wide brim that is not too stiff but not too floppy either. It gave off a very young, girly, doll like and playful look. It came in many different feminine colors and designs with bows, flowers and other sorts of embellishments. High crowned hats that sat on an angle on the head were also very in style for the same reason.

This style pretty much lasted till the late 1930’s when Crochet Snoods came into style. You might wonder how the style changed so drastically from beautiful stylish hats to simple Crochet Snoods. The reason is that in the late 1930’s World War II broke out and the women of that time wanted to show loyalty. Therefore, they chose to save these fabrics and materials for the army instead of wasting it for their own personal pleasure.

Women’s Head Covers Styles and Trends: 1900-1910, Styles Come and Go!

The early 1900’s brought about a whole new style and era of head covers. While up until now all they had been looking for was comfort, since women started going out more it became all about wealth, class, royalty and sophistication. Therefore the simple hat such as the Bonnet they used to wear was mostly not worn by woman at this time. The women preferred something more elegant and fancy looking such as a lavish wide brimmed hat designed with either tulle or ribbon.

For example, a popular hat at this time was the Silhouette which is a wide brimmed hat designed with real human hair that the women used to collect either from their own hair or others. They also wore the pompadour which is more like a hair style where you put on a headband with teeth and place it a little further back than you would like it and then push it forward forming a little bump to provide height. However, in these days, the style was created with the help of a wide brimmed hat used as a base for women to build their hair up on to form a bump. It gave the impression like all the hair was just sitting perfectly on its own but really it was backed up by a large sturdy brim.

In the years 1907-1908 the Merry Widow Hat (which is a type of Silhouette designed with beautiful chiffon and organza and full of feathers) came in. It was part of the costume of “Sonia” the leading lady of the play “the Merry Widow” which opened in London in 1907 and was designed by Lady Duff Gordon.
